Supplies

• 1/2 yard of 60"-wide white fleece
• 1/4 yard of 60"-wide knit stripe
• Assorted 1/8-yard cuts of 45"-wide holiday-print fabric
• 6" of 45"-wide cotton print
• 1/8 yard of 45"-wide orange cotton fabric
• Polyester fiberfill
• Embroidery, bobbin and sewing thread
• Cut-away and tear-away stabilizers
• Water-soluble topper
• Temporary spray adhesive
• Pattern tracing cloth
• Water- or air-soluble marker
• Yarn or large ready-made pom-pom
• Hand sewing needle
• Embroidery designs, including buttons and snowflakes

A. Use large buttons for eyes and smaller buttons for mouth.




















Preparation

• Go to www.cmemag.com to download the snowman patterns. Trace the patterns onto pattern tracing cloth. Cut two heads from the fleece. Mark the face center point and hoop markings on one head.

• Cut one carrot nose from the orange fabric; mark the tuck lines.

• To create the hat fabric, seam together the assorted fabric prints to form a fabric larger than two hat pieces. Cut the hat front and back from the pieced fabrics.

Embroidery

• Using embroidery software, combine the button motifs to create the snowman face. Use larger buttons for the eyes and smaller buttons for the mouth The finished design area should be approximately 128mm x 175mm.

• Hoop the stabilizer and spray with temporary adhesive. Without stretching, position the fleece over the stabilizer, aligning the markings to the hoop placement lines.

• Cover the face area with water-soluble topper and pin in place outside the embroidery area.

• Stitch the face design, clipping all jump threads on both sides of the work. Trim the cut-away stabilizer just outside the design stitching, and gently tear away the topper.

• Cut a piece of tear-away stabilizer to fit the hat front; spray with temporary adhesive. Adhere the hat to the stabilizer and hoop. Randomly embroider motifs over the hat front, rehooping as needed. Don’t catch the extraneous hat fabric in the stitching. Remove the stabilizer after stitching is complete.

Use a topper when embroidering fleece and other napped fabrics to keep the embroidery stitching above the fabric surface.

B. Leave a 4" opening in upper head area for turning.

Leave open.

C. Stitch tuck on marked lines.

Tuck

Construction

All seam allowances are 1 ∕4".

To construct the head, place the fleece layers right sides together and sew the perimeter seam, leaving a 4" opening in the upper head area for turning Turn the head right side out and stuff to the desired firmness. Stitch the opening closed.

To make the carrot nose, stitch a tiny tuck on the marked lines, and then join the straight sides press open the seam. Stuff as firmly as desired. Run a gathering thread around the cone opening and pull up snugly; tie off the threads. Hand stitch the nose in place.

To construct the hat, stitch the front and back together along the slanted edges. Turn right side out and place over the snowman head; adjust the width if needed for a comfortable fit. Seam the cuff fabric short ends together to match the hat lower-edge circumference; press open the seam. Press the band in half with wrong sides together to form a double cuff. Right sides together, stitch the cuff to the hat lower edge. Press the band up 1 ∕4" beyond the seamline.

Use the yarn to make a tassel and attach it to the hat point. Add additional stuffing above the snowman's head to make the hat stand up straight. Lightly hand tack the hat to the snowman. Turn down the top of the hat at an angle.

Finishing
Scrunch the knit fabric around the pillow lower edge and lightly hand tack in place to mimic a scarf. Tie the scarf into a square knot and trim the fabric ends, allowing enough length to create fringe. Make 4"-long clips into the fabric about every 1 ∕2" across the width to form fringe.
